ACROSS THE TRACKS

Blues & the Beat with Dennis Gruenling

Thursdays, 1:00PM to 3:45PM Eastern Time

Biography

On any given Thursday afternoon edition of Across The Tracks, you can hear Dennis Gruenling spin everything from the legends of Chicago-style blues like Muddy Waters, the jump blues styles of Joe Liggins, New Orleans blues of Fats Domino, and even some vocal blues and r&b from the likes of The Spiders. In addition to this, the contemporary masters who keep this music alive will also be featured regularly. Weaving into the mix of music will be facts and history of this music, coming from years of study and a serious record-buying addiction.

Dennis Gruenling has been playing harmonica on the East Coast for over 17 years, and has experience playing with some of the legends in the business like Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Dawkins, Snooky Pryor, and Homesick James, as well as modern masters like Rod Piazza, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Steve Guyger, and Rusty Zinn. He fronts his own band, whom he often performs and records with. Dennis can also be seen as a guest artists with regional acts such as Dave Gross, Chris Vitarello, and The Slippery Chickens. Of Gruenling's own playing, harmonica heavyweight Charlie Musselwhite says “Dennis Gruenling is one of my favorite harmonica players; his tone and phrasing is as good as it gets.” In addition to all this playing, he also founded his own label, BackBender Records, and has been active in the local/regional blues scene starting events like “Harpin' For Hunger”.

Dennis has written and published articles for Real Blues Magazine and American Harmonica Newsletter on legendary harmonica players, their history and techniques. He also taught harmonica at numerous harmonica conventions & workshops worldwide (David Barrett Harmonica Masterclass, Jon Gindick Harmonica Jam Camp, SPAH National Convention, Guitarrentage -Schorndorf, Germany, UK Bluesweek, etc...)  since 1996, and at music schools in Chicago and Manhattan, as well as teaching in his own private studio since 1992. Dennis has been awarded “Best Modern Blues Harmonica Player” by Real Blues Magazine 3 years in a row, and an “Outstanding Service Award” from the SPAH national harmonica organization.
